Slaves to Darkness WIP 1: Nurgle Knights

I think I’ll kick off this new blog by introducing my Slaves to Darkness project. My goal is to convert all my favorite units from the army book to have each mark of chaos. So that’s warriors, knights, lords, sorcerers, and so on. One for each of the five marks of chaos. These are my Chaos Knights with the Mark of Nurgle.

The concept for all of my Nurgle units is corrupted Bretonnians who were deceived and drank from the wrong grail. I’ll write a proper lore post for them later. They’re a heavy work in progress. Basically only the armor plates are done and everything else is blocked out in base colors.

They’re made to be played in Age of Sigmar but I just love the old Warhammer Fantasy setting so much more. I’m also a fan of the Amberfall project by lutherian_99 on instagram. Amberfall is set in AoS, but it’s a post-gods, post-magic future. To me, Age of Sigmar has always been too big and over-the-top with not enough to ground it. I like the idea of the different mortal realms as alternate realities, with the realmgates to connect them. But I think the average person shouldn’t know about them. Knowledge of the cosmology of the realms should be rare and secret. And travel between them should be difficult. I also like the idea of flat “planets” and as you approach the edge, the realm breaks down into a chaotic twisted nightmare of magic and monsters. But again, travel there should be so difficult and rare, that most people don’t even know about it.

So when I think of the lore of my Slaves to Darkness army, I’m really thinking of “The World that Was” and the old Warhammer Fantasy lore. But when I play them in Age of Sigmar, I imagine a world like Lutherian_99’s Amberfall. A post-gods, post-magic world. Where knowledge of chaos is hidden. But sightings of strange creatures in the woods are rising. Creatures which were thought to be mere stories told to frighten children. Raids by barbarians on the borders are increasing. Every year there are more reports of unsettling visions, uncanny mutations, and unexplainable afflictions. And in the courts of power, they whisper about a new dark lord rising.
